Interesting Story...If only just for the prison population part...

August 14, 2012

The judge of the Supreme Court, Rafael Solis Cerda, confirmed that the CSE has asked for the list of convicted criminals for the purposes of cleansing the electoral roll of those citizens serving firm sentences and are disqualified from participating in the election.

The National Penitentiary System reported that the prison population stands at 8,446 but without specifying how many are actually sentenced. (some would be on remand then?)

At the same meeting the head of the Directorate of Legal Aid, General Commissioner Glenda Zavala, said that of the 3,000 prison inmates in Custody in police cells,1,200 are convicted prisoners. (They have no room in the prisons and are using police stations).

No word yet on the mass release that was proposed as a way of emptying out the overcrowded prisons.
