Corn, Cabbage and Bananas

This is along the main road through the Tisey reserve a few km from my house. What I find interesting is that they have planted cabbage, corn and bananas all intermixed. Typically you see fields of cabbage, fields or corn and bananas growing as shade for coffee in this area.

How About Corn

and beans? Have you seen that?

Corn is a big nitrogen feeder, beans supposedly fix nitrogen in the soil, and the stalks support the beans.

Midwest US used to see quite a bit of pumpkins planted among the corn in the old days. Is the cabbage grown. strictly for cattle feed?

I've never seen it offered in a restaurant.

Other than coffee, this is the only mixed crop field I have seen.

Cabbage is quite popular in Nicaraguan food. You will find Nicaraguan cole slaw in Fritangas and sold on the street, typically tossed on top of enchaladas (which is Nicaraguan for tostada in Mexican food circles. And "chancho con yuca" is typically served on a bed of cole slaw.

i suspect

they are using the row crops as a filler until the bananas get bigger. In the long run they would compete for sun and other inputs. I am aware of the technique of planting beans with corn, but the year we planted corn it was so thick there would have bene no room for beans. Probably better to alternate the crops yearly on a given field.

I`ve also noticed that sun , or the lack thereof, is a major limiting factor for tropical crops grown at the higher elevations We grew a local cultivar of corn that was resistant to the cool wet climate. They have some local ayote that is similarly resistant. You save seed from one year to the next.

Cabbage is a cash cow for market farms in the higher elevations, along with potatoes. manzanilla is also used on vacant fields during the drier part of the year. Although it doesn`t seem to pay much, it requires almost no inputs to grow.
